The bowline knot is a very helpful knot for a variety of purposes due to it's very unique quality: it doesn't tighten. You might use a bowline if you are tying it around your waist to be lifted up, or to keep a rope from changing length on a pole or stake. How to tie There is a helpful saying when trying to visualize tying the bowline. “The Rabbit comes out of his hole, runs around the Tree, and goes back down his hole.” This little story is less for learning, more for remembering.
Step 1 Make a loop in the rope

Step 2 Take the running (loose) end, the rabbit, and put it through the loop, back toward the standing end, the tree.

Step 3 Go around the tree to the other side of the standing end, the tree.

Step 4 Pull the running end back through the loop, then pull the standing end while holding running end and the loop.

Step 5
Pull the Standing end to tighten
